PET is the league leader for recycling
PET is the most recycled plastic worldwide, with a recycling rate of 31% in the US, and in Europe an even higher rate of 52%.
One of PET's most outstanding qualities is its exceptional recyclability. PET can be recovered and recycled again and again by thorough washing and remelting for use in new PET products , or by chemically breaking down the PET into its constituent raw materials, which are then purified and converted into new PET.
PET packaging can be collected and recycled into a wealth of products for tomorrow – it can be recycled and used again for containers for foods, beverages and personal care products – or for carpet, clothing, automotive parts, construction materials, industrial strapping, and scores of other products.
Any PET that is unsuitable for recycling because it is too dirty or too contaminated to be properly cleaned can be burned safely and efficiently as an energy source. This is called "thermal recycling."
Envases Universales take active part in the global climate responsibility and focus on minimization of our environmental impact on the surroundings.
For the PET division this involves focus on:
- Recycled material and optimizing of recycled content in all our packaging solutions
- Optimized packaging design with reduced material consumption
- Operational excellence with a minimum of energy consumption
An optimal packaging solution does not only comply with your demand for efficient product protection but also complies with focus on sustainability goals.
Even the smallest design alterations can have a huge impact on the environmental footprint as well as the total cost of ownership due to a more effective use of resources and lighter transport loads.
For our PET carbonated soft drink segment we have a bottle solutions that reduces the bottle weight by about 13%.
The optimized bottle is made with a new base that makes it possible to save material, and at the same time it does not compromise on the performance requirements.
We aim to include the highest amount of recycled content in each packaging product while the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content is critical to create more sustainable and effective closed loop systems.
Many of our products are made from 25%-100% recycled content. PET packaging for household, personal care and beverage is among the product categories that gives the greatest opportunities to use post consumer recycled content.
We use recycled content so that we do not compromise the performance requirements and the aesthetic look of the packaging.
A successful example of optimizing recycled content without compromising the performance is in carbonated soft drinks produced for Coca Cola – here we use 50% recycled content in all the clear bottles and 100% recycled content in the green bottles.
80% of our manufacturing facilities are on-site.
By integrating the packaging production with the filling process at the customers’ site, we reduce the use of CO2 and other transport related environment cost, this contributes to decreasing the environmental impact while it cuts down transportation costs.
