Metal is a leader in recycling – and consumers can help us achieve even more
When it comes to recycling, metal is still one of the leaders.
The latest statistics from 2016 show that steel for packaging recorded an average European recycling rate of 79,5% – a record performance which included 5 countries exceeding 85%.
Meanwhile, the aluminium beverage can has recently been certified as the world’s most recycled drinks container. But there are more objectives to be achieved.
While these numbers are encouraging, there is still a lot to do to reach the 2020 metal packaging industry ambition of an 80% European average rate.
To reach this objective, we need to ensure that metal packaging is fully recognised in the consumers’ eyes as the model for real recycling. Thus, consumer engagement campaigns are crucial.
That’s why we encourage the use of the Metal Recycles Forever logo on your products.
Using the logo sends a clear visual signal to European consumers that you’ve selected a sustainable packaging material, while your product contributes to a collective message to the outside world that metal – compared to many other materials – is highly sustainable and reduces the global consumption of resources
